As something of a Renaissance man, Hoppé seemed to be good at most everything he put his mind to within the visual arts. It was a natural step for Hoppé to experiment with advertising photography, which, in the late teens and early twenties, was just beginning. Hoppé's approach drew upon newly developing theories of "motivational psychology", where he directed and staged his images in such a way as to communicate to the the viewer the experience of personal fulfillment they could enjoy by buying the product.
These examples of Hoppé's early advertising work show his mastery of staging object and gesture so as to persuade and seduce. Note the projection of lifestyle and use of sexual innuendo and formalist elegance to draw his audience in.
